8 Ideas For Writing a Creative Story

So you want to write a novel or a short story. You may sit down with a notepad or a blank screen and you just don’t know where to start. Here are some ideas on how to get inspiration to start writing.

1. Get out and go for a walk. Take a voice recorder (or a notebook) with you and just talk about what you see.

2. Look out of the window – if going for a walk is not an option – what can you see?

3. Do you have noisy neighbors, or are they too quiet? Imagine what might be going on in their home. What is their story?

4. Did you walk past a bum on the street? How did he come to be there? What’s his story?

5. What is your favourite fantasy? Where do you escape to in your head when you are performing mundane tasks?

6. Read a newspaper. What stories are big news? What might happen if some event escalated into a major disaster or discovery that would change the world?

7. Write down some random words and Google them – where does it lead you?

8. Pick up a novel you have never read, open it at a random page in the middle somewhere and copy out just one paragraph without reading anything else from the book. Now imagine what happened before that paragraph and what will happen afterwards.

Above all just get some words down. It doesn’t matter what words at first. Remember: write first, edit later.
